Oh good this blog is still a thing. Close one.

I’m not dead.

Jeez, it’s only been a month and we’re already at the “I’m not dead” post? This is going well.

Well, in that case I guess it must be excuses time. Ready for this one? I guarantee you’ve never heard this one before; it’s practically a revolution in the world of excuses. Seriously, prepare yourself. If you’re standing up for some reason, you’ll wanna sit down. Ready? Are you sure? I promise it’s not too late to back out. You still have like a whole sentence left. Still here? Well, okay then, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I’ve been busy with school.

OOOOHHHHH DRAMA BOMB. BOOM. BET YOU DIDN’T SEE THAT ONE COMING. KABLAMMO or whatever the kids are saying these days.

Seriously though, I’m currently in my penultimate undergraduate semester so 99.9% of the free time I already didn’t have is dedicated to my senior research (more on that later, I’m sure) and my other classes, and applying for internships, and managing my stress levels, and my day job. It’s a grand old time to be sure, but don’t for a second take that to mean I’m not working on games or I stopped caring about this blog. Odds are I’m not going to be able to upload every Saturday like I originally wanted to, so I’ve decided I’ll just kind of post when I can and/or if something interesting happens. I know, I know, It’s such a cop-out, and even saying it’s a cop-out is itself a cop-out, and 90% of the time people post something like this it’s their last post ever, but hopefully it’ll just be temporary and I’m sure your respect and love for this blog will carry you through. ❤

Since it’d be incredibly rude of me to expect you to read this post without me actually saying anything, let me throw a thing your way:

LEVELS – My newest and simplest attempt at a game.

Screenshot 2017-03-09 00.00.34.pngPeople who are smarter than me would advise that I totally should not reveal the ground-breaking technology behind my newest game, but I didn’t get to where I am today by listening to people who are smarter than me. Well, except I did, because I’m in college, and that’s pretty much the whole point, but I digress. A few weeks ago, upon realizing that my portfolio is somewhat weak and the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and Information Science Educators (PACISE) annual conference is the end of this month, I decided I need to make a new game, and fast. Shortly after that I remembered an old idea for a puzzle game I had back when I was a wee freshman and had no idea how to do anything, and shortly after that I mocked up a title screen/first level in Unity.

The basic gist of the game is there’s a series of Levels, that is, overlapping moving mazes, that have to be moved around the stationary “player” in order to get them to the goal. You’d work with two Levels at a time, and every time you reach a goal the current top layer is removed and another layer is added on beneath. It seemed like a solid idea when I first mocked up a few levels on paper, but almost immediately after I had my prototype built I had a horrible epiphany:

That’s literally not even a puzzle though Evan what is wrong with you.

To this day I’m not sure why my inner thoughts sound like a 15-year old girl.

As you may have guessed (if either you’re really insightful or I somehow managed to explain the concept of the game so well that you immediately saw the issue), when two mazes move completely independently and the goal is attached to the bottom maze there is literally no reason to move the top maze. The only “challenge” there is figuring out exactly what the bottom maze looks like when you can only see bits and pieces of it, and while I guess it’s not completely trivial, it’s not the kind of game I set out to make. So, to make a long story short (although why start now?) I’ve scrapped that idea in favor of something even less original, but more on that later.

More boring stuff about the future of this blog

When I first started this blog, my goal was to write a post a week in advance, then spend the next 7 days meticulously editing it until I hate every word I’ve written so much that I just delete the post and write something else last-minute so I can have something up on Saturday. As I’ve said before, with my current schedule this is somewhat unrealistic, so (at least for now) my posts will be more sporadic and potentially less edited. Since I’ve started, I’ve been compiling a list of potential topics that would interest me to write about. Mostly it’s about the conventions I’ve been going to and projects I’ve been thinking about, but there are some more advice ideas as well (because I love talking about stuff I’m unqualified for). That is to say, there is hopefully more content on the way, and for the sake of bookending:

I’m still not dead.

Wow that’s some artful formatting right there.
